  Early American Made Revolutionary War Surgical Set

William Fosbrook Surgical Set

American-made Revolutionary War surgical set are very rare.  Typically during the Revolutionary War, surgical sets would have been imports of English or Scottish origin by makers like Schivley or other well known European makers.  There were few cutlers making surgical instruments in Colonial America at the time of the Revolutionary War.

Note that the handles on the set below, are wood and multisided.  Although the amputation knives in this set are fairly straight, the more typical design seen during this era would be curved blades.

This is an example of what may be the earliest known American made surgical sets.  It is in the private collection of an antiques dealer.  Fosbrook was a cutler who elected to advertise he made surgical instruments in colonial America.
