Roster of Civil War Surgeons

Dr. Michael Echols

The first edition of the Roster contained only 93 pages, and was first published in 1875, and again in 1878 under the title:

"An Alphabetical List of Battles of the War of the Rebellion, with Dates. From Ft. Sumpter, South Carolina, April 12th and 13th, 1861 to Kirby Smith's Surrender, May 26, 1865, Compiled From the Official Records of the Office of the Adjuntant-General and the Surgeon-General, U.S.A., ......  Giving the Number Killed, Wounded, and Missing in Each of the Important Battles, Union Troops Engaged, Names of Generals Killed and Wounded in Both Armies, Also, the Total Number of Enlistments, Number Discharged, Number Wounded, Number Missing, Number of Deaths, Number Killed in Battle, Number of Graves,......  and a Chronological History of the War of the Rebellion, a list of Presidents and Vice Presidents of the United States From Washington to Hayes."

The second edition of 1883, was much enlarged by Strait with an additional 240 pages, adding statistical summaries for major battles, a list of incidents from the war, a chronological history of the war, and more important, listed all  Regimental Surgeons and Assistant Surgeons. The roster of surgeons runs from page 70 to 330, mentions all states from Alabama to Wisconsin

The copy below is the second edition and is the original alphabetical list of the Battles of the War of the Rebellion with dates and a Roster of all the Regimental Surgeons and Assistant Surgeons in the hospital service of the Union Army during the Civil War including Surgeons and Assistant Surgeons assigned to the U.S. Colored Troops. The soft-cover book is 331 pages in length and measures 5 3/4" x 9". It was compiled after the War by J.W. Wells and N.A. Strait and published in Washington, D.C. in 1883.  It is the definitive resource for identification of Union doctors who were in the Army.  It does not list contract doctors, who may have served part-time on either side or Confederate medical personnel.  The other source of identification of surgeons who served is the Medical History of the War of Revolution, which is a 6 volume set.  Cross referencing these two sources will usually determine if a given doctor served as a 'surgeon' in the U. S. Army.
