Civil War Army post-mortem surgical set notes

Notes of  Dr. Michael Echols

(The following are the personal edited research notes of Michael Echols, the source of which may or may not be completely documented)

By 1864, Surgeons were solicited by the Surgeon General and staff to forward to the Army Medical Museum interesting morbid specimens of amputated limbs, images of the same, projectiles which caused the injuries, etc.. This was the beginning of the Armed Forces Institute Of Pathology.  Some dissecting sets have a small saw, others do not.

The post-mortem, autopsy, anatomical dissection set, of the Civil War period,   This type of set may have been required when serving as a regimental surgeon since post mortem examinations were standard and required.
