Civil War Surgeon's Sword of Dr. J. H. Beech

M 1840 Medical Staff Sword inscribed Dr. J. H. Beech.

Dr. Beech was Surgeon for the 24th Michigan Regiment, and ultimately Brigade Surgeon for the Iron Brigade, Army of the Potomac.  He is specifically noted to have performed multiple amputations and surgical procedures during the Battle of Gettysburg at the Express Office warehouse (adjacent to Gettysburg railroad station).

Dr. J. H. Beech's (24th Michigan) inscribed Surgeon's Sword.  Inscription is centered in an oval silver plaque.  Note the blade has a center channel/fuller.

Dr. Beech's sword, blade with center channel and etched:  "U. S. Medical Staff."

 

Reverse view of blade of Dr. Beech's sword showing foliate and panolpy of arms etching.  Blade has no identified maker's marks, but the center channel/fuller and style of etching and heavy mounts/blade all resemble an European import origin.

 

Scabbard with oval silver inlayed plate inscribed:  "J. H. Beech, M.D.".
