Dr. Edwin Bentley's presentation M 1840 Medical Staff/Surgeon's sword

Contact Dr. Paul Johnson mkjandprj@msn.com regarding surgeon images and swords

Inscription reads:  "Edwin Bentley   Brigade Surgeon   U.S. Volunteers   from friends in Norwich, Connecticut"  The circumstances surrounding this presentation sword are not known.  Circa late 1861/early 1862.

Dr. Bentley's presentation Medical Staff Sword was manufactured by Ames and is inscribed by Ames on the blade.  On the brass scabbard is stamped:  "Ames Mfg. Co., Chicopee  Mass", with 'Chicopee' appearing doubly stamped.

Surgeon Bentley's cased Pond presentation revolver with carved ivory Liberty handle.  The cleaning wooden rod is also ivory mounted.  In the case is believed to be Dr. Bentleys tin cased spectacles and field telescope which still works excellently.  The telescope is unmarked.  Circa 1861.

Inscription on Dr. Bentley's presentation Pond cased revolved reads:  "From William Read and Son, Boston, U.S.A."  The significance of the presentation is unknown.  Read and Son were gun manufacturing firm from Boston during the Civil War, and this cased set was apparently given to Dr. Bentley during his service as Assistant Surgeon for the 1st Conn. Heavy Artillery Regiment.  However, Dr. Bentley was soon to receive his Brigade Surgeon's Commission and left his Conn. Regiment

Closeup of Dr. Bentley's ivory carved Pond revolver.  A beautiful eagle and 'Liberty' stand out with high relief.

Inscription on lid of cased Pond revolver presented to Surgeon Bentley:

"Edward (sic) Bentley,  1st Reg. H (heavy) Art (artillery), Ct (Conn)"

Dr. Bentley was the first professor of Anatomy at Howard University, 1868 - 1870; and a founder in 1879 and 3rd Dean from 1904 - 1907 of the Medical Department of the University of Arkansas.  Unfortunately, whilst Medical Director of the Hospitals as Alexandria, Virginia during the Civil War,  he sadly treated his own wife in the hospital, where and when she succumbed to her disease process.
