 Surgeon Bentley's Transfusion Story

Contact Dr. Paul Johnson mkjandprj@msn.com regarding surgeon images and swords

Private Cross, 1st Mass Heavy Artillery, wounded before Petersburg, June 16, 1864, admitted to Alexandria Hospital, Surgeon Edwin Bentley...(his CDV is on the web site #13)....hemorrhage from the posterior tibial artery again commenced and it was deemed advisable to amputate to prevent further loss of blood.  Not more than two table spoonsful of blood was lost, but the patient not seeming to rally, it was determined to test the method of transfusion of blood as recommended by Brown-Sequard.  Blood having been obtained from the temporal artery of a strong healthy German, an opening was made into the median basilic vein, and about two ounces were transfused by means of a Tiemann's syringe.  Immediately after the injection, a marked difference was noted in the patient's pulse, which became stronger and firmer.  The patient recovered and was discharged, pensioned for his leg amputation.

Edit note:

Can you believe that!   Chalk one up for Dr. Bentley and pure luck, the German must have had type O blood.
