Civil War Surgeon's Sword of Dr. Henry C. Bunce

By Melinda K. Johnson and  Paul R. Johnson, M.D., F.A.C.S.

Contact for Dr. Paul Johnson regarding swords and images

M 1840 Medical Staff Sword of Henry C. Bunce, Asst. Surgeon, 1st Conn. Heavy Artillery (same regiment as Surgeon Edwin Bentley, and he served under him).  Sword is by Klingenthal, Germany

Dr. Bunce's Medical Staff sword by Klingenthal with rare features of only having the M of MS silvered.  Also, the blade's obverse and reverse are etched only with foliate themes and all military and U.S. Medical Staff devices are totally absent.  According to John Thillmann, this is exceedingly rare and highly unusual for Klingenthal blades and for the M 1840 Medical Staff sword as a whole in general.

Close up view of the single silver M of MS and the foliate etching on the blade.

Presentation inscription:  "to  Dr. H. C. Bunce  1st C.V.A. (Conn. Vol. Artillery)

By J. L. Welles, J. B. Williams, W. S. Williams, D. L. Hubbard"

Dr. Bunce entered the service in 1861, so this may very well date the sword to early in the Civil War.  The identities of the presenters and circumstances of the presentation are not currently known, research is underway.
