Civil War Surgeon's Sword of Dr. William Gunkle

By Melinda K. Johnson and  Paul R. Johnson, M.D., F.A.C.S.

Contact for Dr. Paul Johnson regarding swords and images

M 1840 Medical Staff sword carried by Surgeon Wm Gunkle, 73rd Pa. Vols..  He served with the 11th Corps, Army of the Potomac at Gettysburg on the first day's field of battle and on East Cemetery Hill for the last two days of fighting.   This sword is by W. H. Horstmann, Philadelphia, with a very unusual full name in banner in the mid portion of the reverse of the blade.  Most likely, this is an European import and marked by Horstmann.

Hilt and scabbard view of the Wm Gunkle sword by Horstmann showing very nice aged brown patina on the brass, never cleaned.

"W. H. Horstmann and Sons, Philadelphia" as etched near the center of the blade which is a rare aspect of this sword.  Normally, his trademark is located on the blade's ricasso.

Presentation inscription:  "Wm. H. Gunkle, Surgeon 73rd Regt. P.V. (Pa. Vols.)  Decr. 1861".
