Civil War Surgeon's Sword of Dr. L. D. Harlow

M 1840 Medical Staff Sword by Horstmann owned by Dr. L. D. Harlow.

 

Dr. Harlow's Medical Staff sword by Horstmann, Philadelphia.  Much gilt remains on the hilt. 

 

Dr. Harlow's Horstmann M 1840 sword with blade etched:  "United Stated Medical Staff".

 

Harlow sword by Horstmann with ricasso block etched:  "Philadelphia".

 

Harlow sword with ricasso etched in block letters:  "W. H. Horstmann & Sons".

 

Scabbard inscription: "Presented to Dr. Lewis D. Harlow, by U. S. A. Hospital Corps, Fourth and George Sts., Philada."   Dr. Harlow was Surgeon in charge of this Philadelphia hospital and later was promoted to Surgeon of U.S. Volunteers.
