M 1840 Medical Staff inscribed and owned by Brigade Surgeon Thomas Sim, Excellsior Brigade.  Dr. Thomas Sim was General Daniel Sickle's Brigade Surgeon and saw much action with the 3rd Corps, Army of the Potomac at both Chancellorsville, and Gettysburg.

At Gettysburg, Dr. Sim was the Surgeon in Charge and Medical Director of the 3rd Corps, and he, with Dr. J. T. Calhoun, amputated General Sickles' leg.  In a very remarkable action, Dr. Sim left with General Sickles immediately after the battle and attended his patient whilst' he was transported to Washington, D.C., and continued to care for him long after.  He later obtained a retroactive order to do so from Surgeon General Hammond.

Dr. Sim later served as Medical Director of Patterson Park Hospital in Baltimore.  He eventually was reunited with Gen. Sickles at a Dept. of the South medical posting.
