the U.S. Army Medical Dept. for inclusion in the Surgeon General's
Library for use by Army Surgeons during the Civil War. Not all
were marked as having been distributed to the Army Hospital Dept. staff,
but the books were selected by the U. S. Army Medical Dept. staff for their value to
the surgeons at the time of the War and listed in the

The 1861 first
edition is on the
list of text
books ordered by the Surgeon General for the Medical Dept. during
the early part of the Civil War. Both editions,: 61 & 64 editions,
were in the 1861 and 1865 Catalogues of the Surgeon General's Office
Library during the Civil War. The second version contains lessons
learned during the Civil War and so states the fact in the preface of
the second and revised edition and is shown below. Venereal diseases
were a major issue during the War and this book was the main source of
information. Dr. Bumstead is cited in the Medical and Surgical History.

Packard's
1863 surgical work work: A Manual of
Minor Surgery, "During the Civil War
Packard was appointed acting assistant
surgeon, United States Army, serving as
attending surgeon to the Christian
Street and the Satterlee United States
Army General Hospitals in Philadelphia,
and as consultant to the Haddington
Hospital, and to the hospital at
Beverley, New Jersey. During the
progress of the battle of Gettysburg, he
received orders to report at the scene
of action, and although quite ill at the
time, from what subsequently developed
into a very severe case of typhoid, he
obeyed at once. For three days and
nights, he labored incessantly and then
being unable to continue at work, was
sent back to Philadelphia suffering from
a nearly fatal attack of the fever"

During the
Crimean War, Macleod was a surgeon in the Civil Hospital at
Smyrna and the General Hospital established at Sebastopol. In
this book he discusses the geography of and climatology of the
Crimea, military hygiene in the field, the use of chloroform as
an anesthetic, and the various wounds and injuries common on the
battlefield, especially gunshot wounds. (Heirs of Hippocrates
1933, Waller 6120). This book was used by Union and Confederate
surgeons during the course of the American Civil War and was
issued by both a Union and a Confederate publisher in 1862.

John Erichsen's Science
and Art of Surgery of 1859, was a major medical text given to
the surgical and medical staff during the Civil War. The book
went thru 10 different editions and was translated into 15
different languages.
Contains information on
surgical procedures, gunshot wounds, amputations, and other
treatments. Used extensively during and prior to the Civil War
to train surgeons. Two editions are in this collection: 1859,
1860, both of which would have been used before and during the
Civil War.

and Lister served as his house surgeon." "published by Blanchard
