BURCH, JAMES DRUMMOND, Yazoo City, Miss., son of James Kerr and Maria (Drummond) Burch—the former born in Kentucky, the latter in Aloa, Scotland— was born in Georgetown, Ky., Feb. 1st, 1840. Graduating from Centre coll., Danville, Ky., in 1860, he attended lectures at Jefferson med. coll., Pa., in the winter of 1862-63, and at the Ky. school of medicine in 1863-64, being graduated M. D. from the latter institution. The session following his graduation be was elected demonstrator of anatomy and prosector to the chair of anatomy, which positions he held until 1867, when the Ky. school of medicine was merged in the med. dep't of Louisville univ. After the consolidation he successively held in the university the positions of demonstrator of anatomy, curator of the museum and ass't to the chair of anatomy.

In 1869 he was elected prof, of anat. in the Louisville med. coll., and in the spring of 1871 resigned this chair and established himself as a general practitioner at Yazoo City.  In the course of his practice he has operated successfully for vesico-vaginal fistula, for laceration of the recto-vaginal septum and for laceration of the perineum ; has twice performed laryngo-tracheotonvy, recovery in each case, and has performed various other capital operations. During his residence in Kentucky, he was a member of the Ky. State med. soc.; medico-chirurg. soc. of Louisville, and Clark со. med. soc., serving as secretary of the latter. He is a member of the Miss. State med. soc., vice-president in 1872; and of the Yazoo со. med. soc., secretary of the latter since 1872. He has contributed occasional papers to professional periodicals, and has been a considerable contributor to literary and political publications. He married, Oct. 6ih, 1874, Florence, daughter of Col. John McAfee, of Mercer со., Ky.
