Dr. Chandler R. Gilman, one of the most genial as well as prominent members- of the medical profession, and for many years Prof, of Obstetrics in the New York College of Physicians and Surgeons, was born, 1802, at Marietta, Ohio, graduated at the University of Pennsylvania in 1824, and soon after settled in New York city. He shortly after assisted Ch. Fenno Hoffmann in the publication of a literary magazine, the American Monthly, and in 1835 published two volumes, "Legends of a Log Cabin" and "Life on the Lakes," in a series of letters to his wife. He had married in 1825, and by patient industry gradually acquired a good practice.

In 1840, he was appointed Lecturer on Obstetrics in the New York College of Physicians and Surgeons, and in 1841, Professor of the same. From this time his abilities, both literary and professional, his full conversational powers and high scholarship becoming more and more widely appreciated, he rose accordingly high in the branches to which he devoted himself. Among his publications may be mentioned his " Maunsell's Dublin Practice of Midwifery, with Notes and Additions by C. R. G.," " Relations of the Medical to the Legal Profession." Tributes to the memory of Dr. Beek and of Dr. Moore, besides various articles to medical magazines and some contributions to Appktoris Cyclopaedia. Fearless and independent in spirit, well read, and possessing a retentive memory, full of anecdote and with a keen sense of humor, he was the soul of good company, while securing to himself a full share of the professional success to which his full talents, his industry, ability, and sterling integrity well entitled him. He was just entering on his 64th year
