Selected quotes from the biography below as obtained from a family member:

"In the spring 1856 he began his long, useful and honorable career as a physician in Roseville, Ind.  In 1862 he moved with his family to Orleans.  Here for 41 years he led a very active and most useful life.  To his his own words "he tried to retire in 1903."  Many old friends and former patients by their constant urging made it impossible for him to retire from the pratice of medicine as long as he lived in Orleans."

"Dr. Laughlin was a man who kept up with the rapid advance of the science of medicine.  In the winter of 1866-7 he attended lectures in Miami Medical College and in 1872 and 73 he attended the famous Bellview Medical College, Ne York City, from which he received the degree of Medical Doctor..."....."He was vice-president of the State Board of Health and of the Indiana State Medical Society.  He served for twenty years as a trustee of the Indiana Medical College.  For many years he was president  of the Orange Co. District Med. Society and also filled the same office in the Mitchell District Med. Society."

"He discovered the method of detecting fractured bones, by means of the stethoscope and for this was given honorable mention in
the Journal of the American Medical Society."...
