Alfred Charles Post, M.D.

Alfred Charles Post (1806-86) was an American surgeon, born in New York City. He graduated from Columbia College in 1822 and from the College of Physicians and Surgeons in 1827, studied in Paris, Vienna, Berlin, and London (1827-29), was professor in the Castleton Medical College, Vermont (of ophthalmic surgery, 1842-44, and of surgery, 1844-51), professor of surgery in New York University (1851-75), emeritus professor (1875-86), and president of the medical faculty (1873-86). He was a fellow of the Academy of Medicine, of which he was president in 1867-68. Post wrote Observations on the Cure of Stammering (1841). He was an inventor of several surgical instruments and appliances.

Anat. from 1831 to 1834 in Coll Phys. and Surgeons.—Prof. of Ophthalmology, 1843, andofGenl. Surg., 1844, in Castleton (Vt.) Med. Coll. Prof. Surg. in Med. Dep. Univ. City of N. Y. from 1851 to 1875, and President of same, 1873- 1886.—Surg. for Ear Disp. in N. Y. Eye Inf. about 1833-4 ; Attg. Surg. to N. Y. Hosp. from 1836 to 1853. Consult. Surg. to N. Y. Hosp since 1853 ; to St. Lukt's since foundation, and to Presby. Hosp.—Vice-Pres. of N. Y. Acad. Med. 6 years; Pres 1867-8.—Died of Cystitis, in New York City, February 7th, 1886.
