WALLACE, ELLERSLIE, Philadelphia,
Pa., was born there June I5th, 1819. He is of English and Scottish
ancestry, and claims to be a direct descendant of Robert Bruce. His
literary education was obtained at Bristol coll., and in early life he
followed the business of surveying.
He studied
medicine under his brother, Dr. Joshua Wallace, then demonstrator of
anatomy at Jefferson med. coll., from which institution he
himself graduated in 1843. Settling down to practice in Philadelphia, he
was appointed demonstratpr of anatomy in his alma mater
and
held the position until he resigned to accept the chair of obstetrics,
and diseases of women and children, then made vacant by the resignation
of Dr. C. D. Meigs, and still continues to fill it. He is a
member of the coll. of phys. of Philadelphia; of the Philadelphia со.
med. soc., and of several gynzecol.
Bocs. A number of articles
on medical, surgical, and obstetrical subjects have been furnished by
him to the journals of his profession. During the war he was an active
member of the Union League of Philadelphia. In 1847 he married Miss
Wistar, daughter of Bartholomew Wistar, Esq.
