WARD, SAMUEL BALDWIN, Albany, N. Y.,
son of L. B. Ward, of Morristow n, N. Y-, and of Al»by I>wight
(Partridge) Ward, Hatfield, Mass., was born in New York city, June 8:h,
1842. He was educated in the private schools of New York and at Columbia
college., New York, and pursued his medical studies at the college of
phys.and surg., New York city, and the med. dep't of Georgetown
college., Washington, D. C. He received his degree of А. В., l86l, A.
M., 1864, and M. D., 1864, and settled first in New York, but removed to
Albany in 1876.
He is a member
of the Northwest med. and surg. soc., was its secretary in 1874-75-76;
of the Albany со. med. soc. ; and of various med. socs,. in New York
city. He has contributed an article on the " Sphygmograph and its Uses,"
to the Л'ао York Aledical Record, vol. iii., p. 385; one on
"Embolism of the Arteries of the Extremities," Л'ет York Medical
Journal, vol. xix., p. 257; and several translations, histories of
cases, etc., etc. He has held the position of prof, of anatomy, and
subsequently of surgery, in the'woman's med. coll. of the New York
infirmary ; and is now prof, of surgery in Albany med. coll.
In 1862 he
was acting med. cadet U. S. army; in 1863 acting ass't surg. U. S. army;
and in 1864 ass't surg. U. S. vols.
In October, 1871, he married Nina
N., daughter of William A. Wheeler, Esq., of New York city.
Dr. Samuel B. Ward, Ex-President of the New
York State Medical Society died at age 73 in Albany, N.Y.
Dr. Samuel B. Ward during a part of
1862 was in the service of the Sanitary Commission on transports of sick
to northern ports. In September of that year he became, by contract with
the Medical Director of the Department of Washington, acting Medical
Cadet, and afterward acting Assistant Surgeon.
Having obtained his degree in medicine, he was appointed, after
examination, Assistant Surgeon, New York
Volunteers, by President Lincoln, and served till the close of the war.
He has been connected with the National Guard since 1872, being now
surgeon of the Ninth Brigade. He came to
Albany in 1876, and has since been one of the faculty of the Medical
College and connected with the hospitals.
He was born in New York City, June 8, 1842,
graduated from Columbia College in 1861. That year and the
following year he attended a course of lectures at the College of
Physicians and Surgeons, and in the second year of the Civil War, was
appointed a medical cadet in the Union Army. He later graduated
from Georgetown University Medical Department in 1864 with a degree of
A. M. Later Union University conferred the degree of Ph. D.
in 1964.
After the War, Dr. Ward spent a year in study
in Europe and returning too up the practice of his profession in New
York City. He was a professor of Anatomy and Surgery at the
Women's Medical College of the New York Infirmary. In 1876, Dr.
Ward came to Albany to continue his practice. He was a member of
the faculty of the Albany Medical College for nearly forty years.
