Horatio G. Kern, was in
the surgical instrument business in Philadelphia from 1837 to 1893. He
was a contract supplier of instruments to the Union Army during the Civil War.
During the 1860's his location was at 25 N. 6th in Philadelphia, Pa. (from

This compact amputation set, (16 x 5 x 3
in. ) is in new condition, has a mahogany case, lined with red velvet, and a single keyed
lock. The instruments are all in new condition, with no rust or evidence
of having been used at any time. One indication this is a later set, is
the presence of a plated tourniquet frame as well as the type of wood case,
which has brass wire inlay in the case top. The brass name plate was never
engraved.
