J. F. Kuemerle Surgical Set c. 1855

A c. 1855 amputation set by John F.  Kuemerle, of Philadelphia, Pa. (1861-1867: 111S. 8th).

All dates are from the Directory of Makers and Dealers as listed by Edmonson in American Surgical Instruments: an Illustrated History:

Martin Kuemerle (various spellings of the name: Kuennerle af­ter 1855. then Kuemerle consistently after 1860; partner of Dietrich W. Kolbe; succeeded by his son-in-law, August H. Wirz, in 1861 or 1862) manufacturer of surgical pumps and syringes, turner in metal, ivory. & wood

1838-43: 2 N. lIth

1844-59: 45 S. 8th

1860: III S 8th

This set is a later civilian variety amputation surgical set.  The lock is centered, and the oval name plate is unmarked.

 

   

 

 

   

 

 

Note the pressure pad (maroon), and the prongs are cast with the tourniquet frame rather than using a buckle so the prongs are not articulated.  Note T shape.   This same tourniquet is shown in Edmonson's book,  page 56, Fig. 73,74.
