c. 1829 amputation set by Peter Rose

Peter Rose was a famous surgical instrument maker located in New York at various locations on William St. from 1822 - 1845.  This set has an address of 78 William St.   Curiously, the trade label seems to have the address number handwritten in, perhaps during the time when Rose was changing addresses frequently.  Edmondson does not show a 78 address, but rather a 72 William St., New York city for 1829-30.   Rose supplied some of the more notable surgeons in New York with instruments.  Rose sets are wanted to buy.  (From Edmonson; American Surgical Instruments: an Illustrated History).

Peter Rose cutler

1829-30: 72 William

1831-35: 35 William

1836-41: 130 William

1842: 129 William

1843: 111 112 William surgical instruments

1844-45: 111 112 William and 61 Elizabeth surgeons' instruments

The  rose wood case is re-enforced on the corners by brass.  Compare these castings on the this case and the Rose trepanning set.  There is a highly decorative brass name plate and the plate is jeweler level engraved with the name  of the owner: (Dodge, MD)  The velvet interior is dark green and typical of these early amputation sets.  The amputation knife blades are heavy, with heavy handles made of crosshatched ebony,  again typical of pre-1830's instruments.

There is a silk brocade lining which is visible in the photo of the inside of the needle compartment.

Look at this similar tissue forceps in a c. 1830 Tiemann set.  Rose and Tiemann were located near each other in NY city.
