Tiemann Civil War partial set, 63 Chatham address

Owned and signed: Dr. James S. Gale, Surgeon, Orwell, Vermont, 60th Infantry New York

Link to additional information on the New York 60th Infantry

The set is Civil War production by Geo. Tiemann, N.Y.  The 63 Chatham address on the maker label is correct for a Civil War issue set.   63 Chatham St.,  New-York, would date the manufacture of this set between 1855 to 1864.  (Tiemann Catalog)

Tiemann or Tiemann & Co., N.Y., sets are wanted for this collection... complete or partial sets and instruments

George Tiemann cutler

1826-32: 35 Chatham Street

1833-55: 63 Chatham Street (manufacturer of scissors and surgical instruments beginning in 1841)

George Tiemann & Co. (George Tiemann, Frederick A. Stohlmann, and Edward Pfarre) surgical instruments

1855-63/64: 63 Chatham and 44 Eldridge

1863/64-71: 67 Chatham and 44 Eldridge

(George Tiemann died 26 September 1868; succeeded by Stohlmann and pfarre; factory built at 81 & 83 Boerum, Brooklyn in 1871-72)

1872-86: 67 Chatham and 107 E. 28th (the latter site bore the name Stohlmann, pfarre & Co.; in 1882 Stohlmann and Pfarre were joined in Tiemann & Co. by their sons, C. Frederick Stohlmann, Louis G. Pfarre, and Julius A. pfarre)

1886-1900: 107 Park Row

Reference: Edmonson

A list of the original instruments is shown on a label which is glued to the backside of the partition.  The mahogany case (17 x 3 x 6 in. ) is brass reinforced with brass screws and military latches.  There is no "U. S. Army Hospital Dept. markings on the instruments or case, but since the bone forceps are missing, that may account for that fact.  It may also be the set was made for the Army Medical Dept. during the War.

I normally do not post partial sets in the display section, but this is a genuine Civil War military Tiemann set  owned by a Civil War documented surgeon.

Any help in obtaining missing parts for this historical set would be greatly appreciated.
