The set is Civil War production by
Geo. Tiemann, N.Y. The 63 Chatham address on the maker label is
correct for a Civil War issue set.
63 Chatham
St., New-York, would date the manufacture of this set between 1855 to
1864. (Tiemann Catalog)

A list of the original instruments is shown on a label which is glued to
the backside of the partition. The mahogany case (17 x 3 x 6 in. )
is brass reinforced with brass screws and military latches. There
is no "U. S. Army Hospital Dept. markings on the instruments or case,
but since the bone forceps are missing, that may account for that fact.
It may also be the set was made for the Army Medical Dept. during the
War.
This is a genuine Civil War military Tiemann
set owned by a Civil War documented surgeon. Surgeon's who
came from State Regiments, could have owned their personal set and taken it
with them when mustered into the regular Army. It is suspected that is
the case with this set as it is marked for the surgeon and is from early in
the Civil War years.
