CIVIL WAR ERA MEDICINE & SURGERY BOOKS

The Short-List of Civil War Medicine, Surgery, Medical Text-books Wanted

Dr. Michael Echols collects and purchases Civil War era medical, surgical, medicine, text-books printed in the United States of America from 1840 to 1865 as representative of medical education prior to and during the Civil War and listed in the Surgeon-General's Library printed Catalogues during the Civil War.  These are the text-books which would have been used by the surgeons and physicians during the Civil War.

Especially wanted: U. S. Army Hospital Department and Medical Department marked books

Civil War medical book topics: Anatomy, Physiology, Materia Medica, Pharmacy, Therapeutics, Pathology, Physic, Practice of Medicine, Surgery, Medical Jurisprudence, Medical Police, Hygiene

Special order text-books were purchased by the Army Medical Department during or just before the Civil War and most, but not all were imprinted with special marks or embossing.  The  following  are examples:
