Apple Streusel

bullet

6 tart apples (Granny Smith) peeled and sliced

bullet

1/3 cup sugar

bullet

½ teaspoon cinnamon

bullet

¼ cup orange juice

bullet

¾ cup flour

bullet

1-teaspoon baking powder

bullet

4 tablespoons margarine,

bullet

2/3-cup brown sugar

bullet

1 egg

bullet

¼ cup chopped nuts, optional

Preheat oven to 350.

Add sugar, cinnamon and orange juice to apples. Mix lightly. Place in 1 ½ quart casserole dish.

Sift together flour and baking powder. Cut margarine into flour and rub with fingers to crumbly consistency. Mix brown sugar and egg. Add mixture, along with nuts, to flour.

Sprinkle streusel over apples and smooth out (I used a fork).

Bake for 45 minutes or until crust is golden brown.

NOTE: I found this in our newspaper, yesterday (9-12-01). It is from "The Jewish Holiday Kitchen " and was excellent! I cut up my butter into small pieces and mixed it in with a fork. Then when I put it all on top of the apples, it was sticky so I just used a fork to spread it out evenly.
