Baked Ziti

bullet

1 pound ground beef

bullet

1 small onion, chopped

bullet

1 small green bell pepper, chopped

bullet

1 (28 ounce) can crushed tomatoes

bullet

1 (6 ounce) can tomato paste

bullet

1 (4.5 ounce) jar sliced mushrooms, undrained

bullet

1 teaspoon salt

bullet

½ teaspoon dried basil

bullet

¼ teaspoon garlic powder

bullet

¼ teaspoon dried oregano

bullet

¼ teaspoon dried crushed red pepper

bullet

8 ounces ziti, cooked

bullet

3 cups shredded mozzarella cheese

Cook ground beef, onion, and green pepper until beef is no longer pink; drain and return to skillet.

Stir in tomatoes, tomato paste, mushrooms, and all spices. Bring to a boil, reduce heat, and simmer, stirring occasionally, for 20 minutes. Stir in cooked pasta and put into 13 x 9 casserole. Bake 20 minutes, at 350 deg.,  top with mozzarella cheese, and bake another 15 minutes at 350 deg.

NOTE: I found this in Southern Living 2001 but I don’t know which month. I fixed the entire recipe and baked only half of it. The recipe called for rotini or ziti and also called for mixing the cheese into the casserole and then baking it. I chose to use ziti and topped the casserole with the cheese. The other half I just froze before baking and we’ll have another time.
