Blackened-Steak Salad

Spice Mixture:

bullet

1 tablespoon paprika

bullet

2 teaspoons ground black pepper

bullet

1 1/2 teaspoons salt

bullet

1 teaspoon garlic powder

bullet

1 teaspoon cayenne pepper

bullet

1/2 teaspoon dried oregano

bullet

1/2 teaspoon dried thyme

Salad:

bullet

3 tablespoons olive oil

bullet

3 tablespoons balsamic vinegar

bullet

1 10 ounce bag mixed greens

bullet

1/2 red bell pepper

bullet

1/2 cucumber

bullet

1/2 cup thinly sliced red onion

bullet

1 sirloin steak

bullet

3 tablespoons butter

bullet

3 ounces crumbled gorgonzola cheese

Whisk oil and vinegar together and season with salt and pepper. Toss salad and vegetables and add dressing. Divide between two plates.

Mix spices together and spread on plate. Coat both sides of steaks with spice mixture. Dip both sides into melted butter. Heat heavy large skillet over high heat until very hot. Add steaks and cook to desired doneness, about 5 minutes per side. Transfer to cutting board and let stand 2 minutes. Thinly slice steaks crosswise. Arrange atop salad and sprinkle with cheese.

NOTE: This is a variation on a recipe in the September Bon Appetite which comes from the Chicago Chop House. I did not add onion, so I put in cucumber instead. I also changed the dressing a little bit. The recipe called for crumbled blue cheese, but he prefers gorgonzola, so that is what I used instead.
